Reports of an explosion across New England on Saturday sent agencies and residents searching for answers, AP reported, before meteor specialists and NASA identified the likely cause: a natural meteor, about three feet wide, entering the atmosphere near the New Hampshire-Massachusetts border.

The details are striking. NASA said the object entered the atmosphere at 2:06 p.m., traveled at about 75,000 miles per hour, and likely fragmented about 40 miles above the ground. The agency estimated the energy released at the equivalent of roughly 300 tons of TNT. That explains why people reported double booms, shaking buildings, and a sense that something had exploded nearby.

The American Meteor Society received reports from Delaware to Montreal, according to AP. That geographic spread matters because it shows why eyewitness accounts are useful but incomplete. A person hears a boom in one city, someone else sees a streak in another, and social media quickly fills the gap with guesses. Without a verification chain, a natural atmospheric event can be mistaken for an earthquake, industrial blast, aircraft incident, or security threat.

The U.S. Geological Survey also had to sort signal from noise. AP reported that people filed shaking reports through the National Earthquake Information Center, prompting an event page, even though no seismic event appeared on seismographs.
